The Department of Botany, one of the oldest and most prestigious departments of the institution, was established in 1954 with the objective of imparting quality education in Plant Sciences and promoting research and biodiversity conservation. The department has been serving the academic needs of students for over seven decades and introduced the Postgraduate Programme (M.Sc. Botany) in 2017 to strengthen higher education and research opportunities. The department is presently supported by five qualified faculty members and four administrative/support staff, maintaining a teacher-student ratio of 1:54. At present, around 270 students are pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Botany. The department enjoys a healthy demand ratio of 1:2, reflecting the increasing interest of students in life sciences and environmental studies. The department is equipped with two well-established laboratories, facilitating practical training and research activities. The curriculum was last revised during the academic year 2020–21 in accordance with contemporary developments in biological sciences and higher education requirements. The department consistently achieves a student success rate of 90–100%, and three students have qualified NET/SLET examinations during the last three years, demonstrating academic excellence. The faculty members actively contribute to research and scholarly publications. During the last five years, the department has produced significant research output with publications by faculty members, including Dr.N. Rajasekhar Reddy (15), Dr. M.V. Suresh Babu (51 publications), Dr. P.V. Krishna Reddy (09), Dr. K. Ramesh (03), and Sri P. Sivarama Krishna (10). In recognition of his research contributions, Dr. M.V. Suresh Babu received the State Best Teacher Award- 2025 and National Adroit Young Scientist Award – 2021. The department has organized several academic programmes of national importance, including a UGC-sponsored National Seminar on “Wildlife Conservation and Endangered Species” (January 2016) and a Science Academies Lecture Workshop on “Recent Trends in Taxonomy, Biodiversity and Conservation” (July 2017). The department also extends free consultancy services to pharmacy colleges and other institutions in botanical and environmental studies. Research is actively encouraged, and the department has successfully completed two UGC-sponsored Minor Research Projects. To support teaching and learning, the departmental library houses 600 books catering to both UG and PG students. The department is also equipped with three computers with internet connectivity, two printers, two KYAN smart teaching systems, LCD projectors, and one virtual classroom facility, enabling technology-enabled learning. The department receives an annual allocation of approximately 15,40,000 for equipment through DBT Star Scheme and UGC funds and 8,000 through special fee funds for conducting practical classes and examinations. With its strong academic foundation, research culture, modern infrastructure, and commitment to quality education, the Department of Botany continues to play a vital role in nurturing scientific temper, environmental awareness, and research aptitude among students.
